For the Fearful

Welcome to the Bridge

Fear is among the most powerful of all emotions. And since emotions are far more powerful than thoughts, fear can overcome even the strongest parts of our intelligence.

Thank you for coming to our website. Thank you for considering something other than what you’ve experienced, heard, or imagined. YOU are part of the solution and I’m grateful for you already.

First of all, I’m sorry. On behalf of Pit Bull Advocates of America, and advocates everywhere – whether they want to apologize or not – I’m exceedingly sorry.

I’m sorry that you’re scared.

I’m sorry you feel anxiety or fear or some sort of overwhelming combination of both when you are faced with dogs perceived as pit bulls.

I’m sorry that someone associated with these dogs belittled your feelings. Called you ignorant. Said you were wrong.

I’m sorry you were yelled at, swore at, and/or scolded for your behavior and reaction when the fear hit your system.

I’m sorry you were threatened.

Please know that I actually understand what you’re going through. We have more in common than you can see at first glance.

Everyday I’m scared.

Many days I feel anxiety and fear or some sort of overwhelming combination of both – just like you.

Because I choose to associate myself with pit bull type dogs people belittle my feelings. They call me ignorant. They tell me I’m wrong.

I get yelled at, swore at, and scolded for my behavior and choices.

I’ve been threatened.

Make no mistake. I’m not taking anything away from you by inserting myself into the discussion. That’s not my intention in any way. I’m showing you the bridge. The bridge that connects us as humans with feelings. Valid feelings – both sets – even though they’re incredibly different.

It’s a rickety old bridge made of wood and connected with rope. The kind you see in movies that always breaks, and the people on the bridge begin to fall. But then something miraculous always happens and the two people work together, hand in hand many times, to climb up and emerge on solid ground. Together. Grateful for each other despite the fact that they’re different people with different views.

I’ve seen the bridge several times over many years. I’ve had the honor of walking out on to it and meeting someone in the middle. It’s broken time after time, but with love, compassion, and determination we’ve emerged together. Grateful. Enlightened. In mutual respect.

Pit Bull Advocates of America wants to meet you on the bridge. This is our message to our advocates. This is our message to you. We want to listen and hear your concerns and help you feel more comfortable. We understand that your anxiety and fear is real and valid. We know the bridge is scary and it might break, but we’re committed to emerging with you. Together. Grateful for each other.

We will not belittle your feelings. We will not call you ignorant. We will not tell you you’re wrong.

We will not yell at you, swear at you, or scold you.

We will not threaten you.

We will embrace your anxiety and fear in the hope that we can help you to not be scared.

Please join Pit Bull Advocates of America in building a new bridge! A shiny, sturdy, new bridge made with the strongest and longest lasting materials in all the universe. A bridge that we can walk on together and that can hold as many people as we can possibly find to cross it. Let’s come together as humans, with mutual respect for our feelings. Let’s leave our anxiety and fear on the one side and emerge together on the other side surrounded by love, compassion, and kindness towards each other.

I’m here personally for anyone that wants to meet me on the bridge. Seriously. Reach out to me. I will grab your hand and I’ll fight for us to come out of this thing together. I want to hear your stories, your fears, and your pain. Email me at michelle@pitbulladvocates.org.

Again, thank you for coming to our website. Thank you for considering something other than what you’ve experienced, heard, or imagined. YOU are part of the solution and I’m grateful for you.
